Starting salary for this position is: $$38.58 - $82.08 per hour based on workload category.

This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. CCS reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

About Us 

The Department of Life Sciences at Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) invites applications for a part-time Adjunct Instructor position to teach Dinosaur Paleontology one to three quarters per academic year. The candidate selected for the position will have access to our paleontological collection, which includes dinosaur bones and teeth, as well as invertebrate and plant fossils contemporary with the dinosaurs. Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) is a beautiful campus located in the inland Pacific Northwest, on the ancestral home of the Spokane Tribe, near the Spokane River. Our campus is not far from the urban center of Spokane, a mid-sized city with a high quality of life and quick access to the outdoors.

SFCC is one of two accredited community colleges that comprise the Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS). Serving about 6,000 students, SFCC endeavors to be an educational leader and a responsive partner with the community and region, offering access to relevant programs of the highest quality. We offer a large liberal arts/transfer program (approximately 75% of total enrollment) as well as state-of-the-art professional technical programs (about 25%). This region includes all of Spokane, Stevens, Whitman, Ferry, and Pend Oreille Counties as well as portions of Lincoln County.

About the Paleontology Instructor - Adjunct - Spokane Falls Community College

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Prepares for and instructs paleontology classes through various instructional modalities.
  • Provides availability and accessibility to students for the purpose of academic consulting and support, in a manner appropriate to meet student's needs, through a combination of scheduled office hours, e-mail accessibility or other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
  • Communicates expectations and establishes clear criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and material supporting the instructional process; evaluates student progress and provides clear, timely feedback.
  • Complies with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; Follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, student financial aid requirements, safety and health issues and related administrative process.
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements. *

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in paleontology, biology, zoology, or a closely related field with coursework in paleontology from an accredited institution OR a Bachelor of Science degree combined with teaching and relevant work experience (e.g., work in a museum) may also be considered.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to always promote the welfare and best interests of students.
  • A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals, and objectives of CCS.
  • The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, community, and technical college system.
  • A demonstrated understanding and value for the contributions that a diverse workforce can make to the success of the organization and the students we serve.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Commitment to advance diversity, promote equity, and prepare students to live responsibly in an increasingly global civilization.
  • The successful candidate will be a well-qualified generalist in Biology or related subject.
  • Experience equivalent to one year of full-time post-secondary teaching experience (graduate students are encouraged to apply).
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success in classes comprised of students with a wide range of abilities.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the district to sponsor an H1-B visa. Benefits Information

Adjunct faculty must work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full-time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible, benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; TIAA-Cref retirement plan or WA State Retirement Plan; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
