Starting salary for this position is: $40.83 - $ 86.87 per hour based on workload category.

This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. CCS reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

About Us 

This position is in our Rural Education department serving SCC sites in Colville, Newport, Inchelium and Republic. Instructor will be on site at one of these locations and teaching to the others remotely.

Spokane Community College (SCC) is a beautiful campus located in the Inland Pacific Northwest, on the ancestral home of the Spokane Tribe, near the Spokane River. Our campus is not far from the urban center of Spokane, a mid-sized city with a high quality of life and quick access to the outdoors.

SCC is one of two accredited community colleges that comprise the Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS). This region includes all of Spokane, Stevens, Whitman, Ferry, and Pend Oreille Counties as well as portions of Lincoln County.

About the Rural Adult Basic Education Instructor - Adjunct - Spokane Community College

Spokane Community College’s Extended Learning Division is looking for qualified instructors for our Adult Basic Education programs in Colville, Newport, Inchelium, and Republic, Washington. This position will work primarily in one of these locations while providing instruction to the other sites via Zoom or ITV. They will partner with the rest of our rural education faculty to provide quality instruction in our High School Plus and GED programs.

Spokane Community College seeks qualified candidates for adjunct Adult Education Instructor. This position will teach in our rural sites and in the following programs:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares for and instructs classes in the subject areas including reading, writing, math for college, career readiness, and other relevant high school subjects
  • Assesses, monitors, and documents student performance and advises students in meeting their educational goals. 
  • Ability to use technology for instruction purposes as teaching assignments will include distance education modes of instruction; 
  • Maintains student records;  
  • Completes paperwork required of ABE instructors
  • Collaborate effectively within the Extended Learning Division and relevant SCC divisions with similar programs
  • Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include, but not limited to, developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process as well as evaluating student progress and providing clear and timely feedback.  
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions.  
  • Complies with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements.  
  • Collaborate effectively within the Extended Learning Division and relevant SCC divisions with similar programs
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform all related duties as required.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution combined with relevant teaching experience. 
  • Ability to use a variety of teaching methods and technology for instruction purposes. 
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform related duties as required. 
  • Decision Quality: Ability to make good and timely decisions that keep the department, and the organization, moving forward 
  • Situational Adaptability: the ability to meet the shifting demands of diverse student needs and changing situations
  • Effective communication through phone, email, Zoom/Teams, and Canvas to stay connected with students and the instructional team.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning, and working environment that honors diversity, equity, and inclusion.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university 
  • Ability to assess adult student learning 
  • Experience teaching adults. 
  • Able to provide helpful and timely feedback to students 
  • Knowledge of a learning management system such as CANVAS 

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. Benefits Information

Adjunct faculty must work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full-time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible, benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; TIAA-Cref retirement plan or WA State Retirement Plan; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
