Salary Range: $3,643 - $4,865

Starting salary for this position is: $3,643 (Monthly)

Employees hired at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. An employee hired at anything higher than the entry step of the range will have salary step advancement after 12 months and every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase.

Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) is a beautiful campus located in the inland Pacific Northwest, on the ancestral home of the Spokane Tribe, near the Spokane River. Our campus is not far from the urban center of Spokane, a mid-sized city with a high quality of life and quick access to the outdoors.

SFCC is one of two accredited community colleges that comprise the Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS). About the Orientation Specialist

Reporting to the Manager of Admissions in Admissions & Registration, the primary purpose of this position is to support the onboarding of new Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) students by coordinating orientation programming. The Orientation Specialist serves as the primary representative in SFCC’s orientation programming, focusing on coordinating a welcoming and friendly experience for all new students to college.

This position is highly collaborative with staff and advisors within SFCC’s pathways of study, as well as external stakeholders such as high school counselors. A successful candidate will be a strong and clear communicator, highly organized, and adaptable to the ever-changing needs of SFCC’s student demographic. Additional responsibilities include preparing reports, triaging student onboarding questions, and maintaining a process manual and checklists for event planning.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Coordinate orientation programming for new SFCC students. *
    • Create an annual schedule of orientation programming, vetting with internal and external stakeholders such as high school counselors.
    • Coordinate and document staff and faculty participation in orientation events.
    • Maintain a system to manage the flow of information about orientation requirements and opportunities for new students.
  • Responsible for all communication and resources for orientation events. *
    • Provide information and resources to participating staff volunteers.
    • Manage surveys and compile results in event rosters and reports and distribute to appropriate stakeholders.
    • Triage student questions about orientation via phone, email, and in person.
  • Maintain process manuals and checklists for event planning and day-of preparation. *
  • Collaborate with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Manager and Manager of Admissions to assess functionality and efficiency in orientation events and communication campaigns. *
  • Collaborate with Manager of Admissions to provide quarterly data analysis to assess previous terms orientation events. *
    • Provide information on modality of service, pathway specific and general attendance, and implement a student satisfaction survey to guide enhancements of event.
    • Work with processing staff to forecast appropriate capacity for upcoming quarter’s events.
  • Provide back up support to other Admissions & Registration functions, including: *
    • Provide student placement support for transcript evaluation, directed self-placement activities, and alternative placement measures such as standardized test scores.
    • Provide support to students by answering basic admissions and placement questions.
    • Facilitate soft hand-offs with other SFCC departments to connect students to various campus resources.
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements. *
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution; or an equivalent mix of education and experience that demonstrates the candidate meets all competency requirements for this position.
  • Excellent computer skills in an office environment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
    • Two or more years of experience in higher education (preferably within student affairs).
    • Experience with student management systems (PeopleSoft, Canvas, SARS etc.).
    • Experience with processes used to develop and schedule events (including scheduling staff/advisors, booking appointments), and creating post-event reports.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is performed in a semi-open office environment with frequent interruptions and background noise.
  • Work is sedentary.
  • Frequent use of computers.

  • Work directly with students/clients.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Full-time schedule (12 months, 40 hours a week).
  • 6-month probationary period.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • Criminal background check is required.
  • This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Membership is optional.

Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; WA State Retirement Plan; vacation and sick leave begin to accrue at the rate of one (1) day per month, upon employment. (For positions that are less than full time, leave accruals will be prorated to the percentage of the position.) This position is designated a bargaining unit position and union membership is not a condition of employment. Leave accruals and usage are governed by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
