The salary range represents the earning potential for this position, through training, evaluations and years spent working in this position with CCS.

About Us 

We are a community college district comprised of two accredited colleges, Spokane Community College (SCC) and Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC). In addition to serving a large urban and suburban population in greater Spokane, the district provides educational services to rural communities throughout a 12,302 square-mile region in Eastern Washington. This region includes all of Spokane, Stevens, Whitman, Ferry, and Pend Oreille Counties, as well as portions of Lincoln County.

Both colleges of CCS are accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and governed by the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges.

About the Instructional Designer

Reporting to the District Director of eLearning, the Instructional Designer is responsible for supporting faculty teaching online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses in advancement of the CCS Strategic Plan. This position consults with faculty to design/redesign high quality learning environments based on sound adult learning theory and instructional design practices while promoting the effective use of technology in teaching and learning.

Major areas of focus include:

  • Course design consultation
  • Faculty professional development in teaching pedagogy and technologies
  • Constructive course reviews
  • The integration of new educational technologies into curriculum.

The instructional designer is well-versed in adult learning theory, pedagogical strategies, instructional design models, and instructional technology.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty and apply instructional design practices to design or improve courses using recognized best practices: Integrating course objectives and learning outcomes to enhance student success; integrating media, streaming content, and other educational technologies as appropriate; following online accessibility standards; participating in and guiding selection, development, and maintenance of online learning content to promote learning student achievement, equity, and inclusion. *
  • Offer creative and innovative ideas for teaching and learning technology to promote learning leading to student success. *
  • Design and deliver comprehensive trainings, professional development, and one-on-one consultations for CCS faculty, staff, and students. *
  • Design evaluative methods to measure effectiveness of training and materials; analyze evaluations and make recommendations for changes. *
  • Use research-based course design rubrics to facilitate course reviews upon request of faculty. *
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend emerging instructional technologies and tools by working with vendors, coordinating demonstrations, and actively soliciting faculty feedback and evaluation. *
  • Consistently evaluate practice and initiate strategies to advance inclusivity and equity-based practices in teaching, learning and professional development. *
  • Participate in departmental and district strategic planning, goal setting, and program assessment. Collaborate with all members of the eLearning department. *
  • Compile statistics and write reports documenting eLearning Department activity as required. *
  • Assist the eLearning Help Desk when necessary. *
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements.*
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Or an equivalent mix of education and experience that demonstrates the candidate meets all competency requirements for this position.
  • Experience in instructional design, eLearning development, professional development, and/or educational coaching.
  • Experience delivering instruction such as classroom teaching or professional development delivery.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collegial partnerships with faculty, interpret needs, and produce meaningful instructional materials. Willingness to be a problem solver and proactively seek solutions to support instruction.
  • Thorough understanding of curriculum development and instructional design; demonstrable ability to design and evaluate effective web-based curriculum using current instructional design methodologies, techniques, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories, pedagogical strategies, instructional design models and concepts as well as alternative and authentic assessment methods and techniques.
  • Ability to design and deliver online and face-to-face professional development workshops. Must be able to engage an audience and lead small and large groups to mastery of learning objectives.
  • Demonstrable proficiency using MS Office software, with advanced expertise in learning management systems, screen-casting software, web conferencing platforms, eLearning authoring tools, and hardware used to support instructional software.
  • Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communications.
  • Excellent project management and multitasking skills; creative and flexible approach to problem-solving.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Curriculum & Instruction, or another closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • College level teaching experience.
  • Proficiency using course design rubrics.
  • Proficiency in applying Universal Design for Learning framework.
  • Proficiency in digital media production and/or graphic design.
  • Proficiency with Canvas, Panopto, Respondus, or Zoom.
  • Advanced proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop; and/or eLearning authoring tools including Camtasia, H5P, and OER Publication.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and background noise.
  • Work is sedentary.

Conditions of Employment

  • Contract 12 month position.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • May require local or regional travel.
  • Criminal background check is required

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the district to sponsor an H1-B visa. Benefits Information

This is a contracted, exempt management position. Medical, dental life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under the Public Employees Benefits Board; TIAA-Cref retirement plan or WA State Retirement Plan. Vacation leave accrues at the rate of 14.67 hours per month (22 days per year) and sick leave accrues at the rate of 8 hours per month, effective upon employment. (For positions that are less than full time, leave accruals will be prorated to the percentage of the position.)
